Youth Training Programme

Energy Garden

A hands-on Youth Training Programme for young Londoners, packed with loads of experiences—from fun classroom sessions and trips to see solar panels in action, to visiting the Houses of Parliament, building your own mini solar panel, and even getting stuck into outdoor gardening and biodiversity activities.

Project overview

In 2024, we helped fund Energy Garden’s Youth Training Programme, giving 32 young Londoners the chance to earn recognised awards, get paid the Real London Living Wage for their time, and have their travel costs fully covered too.

Paying participants properly not only values their time and contribution but helps remove barriers that often prevent young people from accessing opportunities in the green sector.

About the project

Backing the Next Generation of Sustainability Leaders

These Youth Training Workshops were all about helping young people build the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take on future careers in sustainability. The sessions covered everything from energy efficiency and solar panel installations to biodiversity and nature-based solutions. On top of that, trainees got hands-on career support like employability skills training, one-to-one CV writing sessions, and mentoring.

Empowering Young Londoners from Diverse Backgrounds

The programme supports young people aged 18–24, with a big focus on diversity and inclusivity. In 2024, 68% of the trainees were women, and 92% came from minoritised ethnic backgrounds. Plus, 81% of the trainees were from London boroughs facing high levels of deprivation. By targeting these communities, the programme makes sure that young people from underrepresented backgrounds have the chance to build skills and kickstart careers in sustainability—helping to create more equal opportunities in the sector.

Our Youth Training Programme delivers incredible benefits for young Londoners who need it most... In 2024, we significantly scaled our programme, with more cohorts and trainees than ever before, and we appreciate the important contribution made by the Powering Communities Fund.
