Community Power Club

We're excited to introduce our Licence Exempt Supply offering, a brand-new product designed to help community generators earn more from their projects by supplying energy to their members and local communities.

How it works

  1. Hold an active PPA with Younity and register your interest in joining the Community Power Club.

  2. Build a club that reflects your community by choosing who can become a member and who can benefit from LES.

  3. When club members consume electricity at the same time your projects generate it, everyone benefits. Your projects earn additional revenue, and members enjoy lower energy bills.

While you fill your club with the members that matter to you, we’ve partnered with Octopus Energy Business to fill any spare extra spots with their business customers, so you can start maximising value for your organisation from day one.

What does this mean for your members?

You'll be able to invite households and businesses of your choosing to join your club and share in the benefits of your licence exempt supply. You'll have control over your club... that's really important to us.

Every club will have its own dashboard, making it easy for members to see how much of their electricity use has been matched with generation. They’ll also be able to track how the club is performing overall, helping everyone better understand their energy use and maximise their matching.

When members consume power at the same time your project is generating, they'll receive a discount on their electricity bill. The size of the discount will vary depending on the levy rates during each half-hour period.

The Community Power Club gives our co-op a stronger connection with our members, helping us to maximise our social impact! It gets us the most from our PPA, increases our community focus and supports homes and businesses by saving them money...all while thinking about long-term energy security - it's a win, win...win!

Who’s eligible to join?

To take part in a Community Power Club, the generator will need to have an active PPA with Younity.

For households to join, they’ll need to be on the Community Power Tariff, the only tariff on the market powered entirely by community-generated electricity, and have a smart meter.

For businesses to join, they'll need to be on an Octopus Energy Business tariff and be half-hourly settled.

We also know this tariff won’t suit every household, for example, those with solar panels or EVs. That’s why we’ll also support a number of Octopus Smart Tariffs.

FAQs

What are my compliance and legal responsibilities?

While your licensed supplier/partner (e.g. Younity/Octopus Energy) will typically manage compliance, settlement, volume matching, and exempt supply limits, you remain ultimately responsible. Breaching exempt supply limits is an offence, so it's important to understand your risk exposure.

Before signing an agreement, make sure you:

  • Understand your compliance risks
  • Review any contractual obligations
  • Clearly understand your responsibilities.
What is the eligibility criteria?
  • Renewable energy generator - Solar, Wind, Hydro
  • No more than 5MW per hour (of which no more than 2.5MW per hour supplied to domestic customers) of supply can be considered license exempt supply per legal entity.
  • Installed capacity of less than 50MW
  • Not Renewables Obligation (RO) accredited
  • Not in receipt of Feed in Tariff (FiT) export payments (generation payments are permissible)
What is a Class A generator?
  • A small-scale generator may act as an electricity supplier, subject to applicable generation and supply limits, although this exemption is not available to generation sites receiving RO or FiT export payments.
What is a Class C generator?

The Class C exemption applies to electricity supplied through a private wire arrangement and is not subject to the 5 MW supply limit; however, Class C volumes are counted towards the overall Class A exemption allocation.

Our Community Power Club is designed to help community generators pass on even more benefits to their communities. But it doesn't stop there; it will also help energy users shift their consumption to better align with generation from renewables, using a simple bespoke dashboard tailored to your club.

It’s a win for community energy projects, lower bills, and a more flexible grid.
