Sharing Shed
Rousay, Egilsay & Wyre Development TrustRousay, Egilsay & Wyre Development Trust have created a Sharing Shed to help their community live more mindfully and give pre-loved clothes, appliances, and goods a new lease of life.

Project overview
The Sharing Shed was already the heartbeat of this rural community.
All we did was help fund a small facelift—fitting a new door, repairing the windows to make the building watertight again, painting inside and out, and laying new floors. Now the space looks brighter and better than ever.
About the project
Recycling Made Easy
REW Development Trust represents the three tiny islands of Rousay, Egilsay, and Wyre, just off the Orkney Mainland. Life on a remote island comes with its quirks, like figuring out what to do with things you no longer need. With recycling centres and charity shops off-island, you’re looking at a ferry ride followed by a bus or car trip—way too much effort for a broken toaster! And without that option, unwanted stuff often ends up in the general waste, heading straight for landfill.

Enter the Sharing Shed! This clever little spot cuts down on all that unnecessary travel and gets everyone into the habit of reusing, recycling, and re-loving pre-loved items. Best part? Everything’s completely free, so no matter your budget, you can grab something handy for you or your family—helping keep perfectly good stuff out of the bin and back in action!
It's great to have a place on the island to donate items that I no longer need and to think that they'll get a good home and be useful to someone else!

At Younity, we’re all about backing brilliant ideas that bring people together & do good for the planet. The Sharing Shed is a perfect example—less waste, more sharing, and a whole lot of heart. It’s amazing what can happen when a community gets creative with what they’ve got, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping make it happen!
